Did Coldplay hit this one out of the park or what?

No, Mary. They didn't. But then again, I've always felt like Coldplay was more like a wonderful Little League effort swinging like heck to reach the 403' center field marker at Yankee Stadium but never quite having the oomph to pull it off.. YMMV. And obviously does.

That's so interesting that you feel that way. The lyrics recall all kinds of biblical imagery. But rather than taking a literal interpretation of the song (who is the "I"?) here's what I am hearing as this song is the soundtrack of the week. It's the first time I've heard a song that just simply seems to be played everywhere right now, especially with the Financial Crisis exploding around our ears:
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemies eyes Listen as the crowd would sing: "Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand ...
I believe they did Mary. I believe Coldplay is one of the few bright lights of talent and creativity in an otherwise banal, hypersexualized and violence-fueled slurry that is being foisted off for music these days.
Consider some of their other toppers like Clocks, Speed of Sound, and Violet Hill...
