Aw shucks, I missed it. The video is "no longer available."

The link is there now! I first heard this song when my father and the family were on assignment in Portugal. I had to listen to the Armed Forces Radio Service on shortwave and remember thinking how the lyrics would go in Portuguese!

Oh my, what memories this has brought back. My mother was named Irene, and my dad would sing this song to my mom every once and awhile. Wow, I'm just a bit over whealmed since this brings back memories of, oh....50 years ago.

This was my grandmother's favorite (secular) song.
I'd forgotten that the Weavers popularized it. I wonder what else they might have made popular had they not been blacklisted.
Isn't that Pete Seeger on bango?

Yes, that's Pete Seeger on the banjo. He was one of the original Weavers and like the others, suffered through blacklisting. He did become of the major figures in the folk revival of the 50s and 60s.

He is famous in Dylan lore as being the one who threatened to cut Bob Dylan's powercord with an ax when Bob went electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. And it wasn't just because the music was too loud.
